I was having a conversation with someone at work today about game engines and there graphics limitations and capabilities and it led me back to this environment piece by Finn Matthiesen. This is a perfect showcase of todays graphics technology. Using Cryengine 2 Finn was able to build an environment in only ten weeks that pushes the engine and computer to its limits. Finn stated that the map was playable on his Ati Radeon HD 4870, there were explorable indoor areas, and everything except standard Crysis foliage and community created tree packs was created by him alone.
The piece itself has a sense of history, story, and lore only rivaled by places like Rivindell in the epic trilogy Lord of The Rings. If you would like to see more pictures and information on this project don’t hesitate to check out Finns portfolio here. I will be making a companion post within a few days on how much work goes into creating a piece like this and how modern game engines render such stunning graphics such as this.
